First visit?
If this is your first visit to the Barford Heritage website, then this page is designed specially to introduce you to its contents and to help you find your way around.
The website is designed and maintained by the Barford Heritage Group. You can find out more about the Group on the Home page.
The web site was launched in March 2009, and will be developed over time into a comprehensive record of the Group's researches.
The Latest News page highlights current news and events while the What’s New page keeps track of all the updates to the website so you can see what's changed since your last visit.
The website aims both to entertain and inform. To meet these two objectives, the website contains various sections of content where we are bringing together feature articles, photo galleries and data / information resources.
Website content
The Themes pages are a major element of the website. They contains feature articles, each with a particular local historical theme. Initially, this section contains a brief history of Barford, and the first virtual heritage trail around the village. We are working on many more features, and new themes will be added to this section over time.
The Genealogy pages started life on the Barford Community website. The section has been moved across and will continue to be developed here. It operates as an on-line community and allows family history researchers to post requests for information to a world wide audience.
The Resources pages will be developed to give access to data relevant to local Barford history. Initially this section contains a summary of the Barford census of 1881, and a record of all monumental inscriptions in St Peter's Church and churchyard.
The Contact us page has details of how to get in touch with the Group. We always welcome new members and fresh ideas for research or new content for the website.
A Photo Gallery section will be added shortly, to display many of the old photographs of Barford that the Group has collected.
As the website content grows, a Search facility will be added. We are also gathering together a list of websites which have complementary information, and this will be published in a Links section.
Navigation
The main menu bar sits across the top of every page and gives access to the key sections of the website.
On each individual page, additional options may be available from boxes in the left or right hand columns of the page. These options give access to other pages related to the content of the particular page.
If you get lost while browsing, then the Site Map page option is available on the main menu for every page. This gives direct access to any page on the website with a "single click". It’s difficult to get lost though, because a "breadcrumb" trail below the main menu shows where the page you are currently viewing sits on the website, and this has links to help you retrace your steps or move through the levels of the website.
Other features
Many of the photos can be enlarged by clicking on the photo itself. The enlarged photo will then be displayed in an overlay window. Try this out on the photos above (you need to allow Javascript on your web browser for this to display correctly).
The virtual heritage trails require that you have Flash player installed on your PC to view the photos and other information. A link is provided to allow you to download this software if necessary.
Documents can be downloaded in PDF format. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat reader installed on your PC in order to read these documents. A link is provided to allow you to download this software if necessary.
